What is radiation and how people are exposed to it?

What long-term effects can be expected from radiation exposure?
Excessive exposure to doses of radiation can increase the risk of certain types of cancer developing in the long term. Radioactive iodine can be released during nuclear emergencies, which if breathed in or swallowed will concentrate in the thyroid gland and increase the risk of thyroid cancer.
